There are 2 types of rhinitis, allergic and non-allergic rhinitis.
Around 1 in 3 people suffer from allergic rhinitis, making it one of the most common health conditions. It is caused by allergens such as pollen, dust, mould and animal allergies. Depending on the cause of your allergic rhinitis it may be seasonable or may be something you suffer from year round. As well as a blocked or runny nose it generally also causes itching and sneezing.
Allergic rhinitis is caused when your immune system reacts to an allergen in the same way it would to an infection or virus. It produces histamines which cause the symptoms.
Not every case of rhinitis is the result of an allergy. Non-allergic rhinitis is most commonly caused by an infection such as a cold, overuse of nasal sprays and decongestants or over-sensitive blood vessels in the nose. Other factors such as changes in the weather, smoke, hormonal changes or stress can also cause it.
In non-allergic rhinitis the lining of your nose becomes inflamed, due to expanding blood vessels and congestion leading to symptoms.
How to treat Rhinitis
In both cases of rhinitis avoiding the triggers would be an effective way of getting rid of the symptoms. In some cases this will be more possible than in others.
Anti-histamine tablets are commonly used to reduce symptoms of allergic rhinitis and cold and flu tablets may help with viral non-allergic rhinitis.
