Psiorasis - is a chronic (long lasting) skin complaint

What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a chronic (long-lasting) skin complaint. It can be recognised by red, flaky, crusty and itchy patches of skin covered in silvery scales. The most commonly affected areas are the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back although it can affect any part of your skin.

Who can it affect?
Psoriasis affects around 1 in 50 people, and severity varies from person to person. Many people will just have a small patch of this itchy, flaky skin but it can also flare up and die down. Psoriasis is not infectious – it cannot be passed from one person to another.

It is thought that psoriasis is caused by the immune system – an error results in the skin cells generating more quickly than in people without psoriasis. It is not known why this occurs, it may be partly hereditary or be caused by environmental factors such as a virus.

Instead of skin cells being developed to replace older cells which die off and are shed, in psoriasis there is a much fast turnover of skin cells. A build up of skin cells on the top layer of your skin causes the red, flaky plaques.

Around 10% of psoriasis sufferers will also develop a form of arthritis called psoriatic arthritis.
