Understanding Obesity Weight Loss

Obesity - excess body fat accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health How can obesity affect you?

If you are considerably overweight then you are classified as obese. Being overweight, and particularly being obese, can make you more likely to develop certain conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers. It can also affect your quality of life and may lead to depression.

Am I overweight?
One way of assessing weight is the Body Mass Index (BMI). To calculate your BMI use the following sum:

Weight (in kilograms)
Height * Height (in metres)

If your BMI is between 25 and 29 you are considered overweight. If your BMI is between 30 and 39 you are considered obese

Your waist measurement can also be a useful indicator. Women with waists over 80cm and men with waists over 94cm are more likely to develop obesity related illnesses.

Weight Loss Treatments
Making changes to your lifestyle is the main way to improve your health and get your body weight back into the health category. You gain weight by eating more calories than you burn off (in exercise, day-to-day tasks and maintaining body functions). So in order to stop gaining weight and to lose weight you need to address this balance so you are consuming fewer calories and burning more in exercise.

Weight loss groups or a dietitian can help some people to lose weight. There are also many websites that help you to understand the calories in food and lower calorie alternatives.

If you are obese and your health is considered to be at risk there are prescription medicines that you doctor can provide to help you lose weight in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise. However these are rarely prescribed as they are not suitable for everyone. Gastric band surgery is also an option which can be used, but again isn't a simple solution which is suitable for all.
