Understanding Joint Pain

Joint pain - is extremely common and is a symptom of a range of injuries and conditions What is joint pain?

Medically joint pain is known as arthralgia. Initially it can be useful to determine if your joint pain may be acute or chronic.

Types of joint pain
Acute joint pain will go away after a few weeks, and is often caused by overuse injuries such as sprains and strains, or by infections such as the flu virus.

Chronic joint pain is pain that lasts several weeks, months or even years. Arthritis is a type of chronic joint pain, which causes pain, swelling and stiffness in inflamed joints. There are different types of arthritis with the most common being rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and gout.

Bursitis is swelling and irritation of the bursa; small fluid-filled sacs which act as a cushion between joints, muscles and tendons. It can be caused by overuse, particularly with a change in activity level or by arthritis.

Knee pain is the most common complaint, followed by shoulder pain and hip pain, but joint pain can affect any joint in your body. If you are not sure what is causing your joint pain, your doctor may be able to help with a diagnosis.

How to treat joint pain
Joint pain relief depends on the cause, for overuse injuries, rest and gentle stretching are vital for recovery. Painkillers and support bandages may also help, as can hot and cold treatments such as a wheat bag or ice pack. Heat treatments should not be used immediately after injury as they can increase swelling – ice is best in the first 48 hours. For arthritis it is important to keep exercising the joints. Keeping them still will worsen the stiffness making it more painful when you try to move them again. Again anti-inflammatory painkillers and heat therapy / ice will help relieve pain.
