Understanding Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia - is a syndrome where sufferers experience widespread, ongoing pain What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia  is a syndrome where sufferers experience widespread, ongoing pain throughout their body. Fibromyalgia literally means pain in the muscles and connecting tissues. If you have fibromyalgia you may also suffer from a number of other symptoms including disturbed sleep, tiredness, poor memory and concentration, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, stiffness and cramping.

Fibromyalgia is most common in women between 30 and 60, but it can affect anyone. The causes of fibromyalgia are still unknown. Some researchers believe it has overlaps with chronic fatigue syndrome. It has also been suggested that it is an immune disorder or that it may be caused by low hormone levels. Secondary fibromyalgia can be triggered by other conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or an under-active thyroid.

What is likely is that your body's pain messages become disturbed, causing your feelings of pain to become intensified, and for you to become more aware of pain throughout your body.

Fibromyalgia is difficult to diagnose as there is unlikely to be results in any lab tests and symptoms can be similar to a number of other conditions. Diagnosis is made by ruling out other conditions.

Managing Fibromyalgia pain

Unfortunately there is no cure for fibromyalgia so treatment is about relieving pain, helping you sleep and generally make the condition easier to live with.

There are many things you can do yourself to help relieve your symptoms. Gentle exercise has been found to be particularly helpful even though you may not feel like it. Relaxation, massage, heat treatments and good sleep habits are also useful.

Over-the-counter painkillers or drug-free pain relief are also beneficial. As well as relieving pain they can help make a good night's sleep or exercise more possible.
