Tinnitus is the hearing of noises in your ear that aren't present outside your ear. You may get tinnitus in one ear, both ears or find it hard to pinpoint where the sound is. Not just confined to ringing, tinnitus can include a wide range of sounds such as:

  • hissing
  • static
  • buzzing
  • whooshing
  • popping
  • roaring
  • chirping
  • and growling
  • as well as in some cases music.

How does tinnitus occur?

Many people get tinnitus, and around 10% experience it constantly. It ranges from a mild annoyance to something much more severe. In worst cases it can seriously impact your ability to hear other noise, make you very sensitive to noise, disturb your sleep and make it impossible for you to focus. It can also be frustrating if people around you don't understand how it is affecting you.

There can be a number of triggers for tinnitus including wax build up, infections, damage to hearing and certain medications. Less frequently it is caused by Meniere's disease which also causes dizziness, or by head and neck trauma or a tumour. Stress and anxiety can make tinnitus noise louder or more frequent.
