Understanding Poor Circulation

Circulation - how blood transports oxygen and nutrients around the body

What is circulation?

Your circulation is simply how your blood circulates around your body, transporting oxygen and nutrients to where they are needed. Poor circulation occurs when the blood flow is restricted to certain parts of the body. Often people notice poor circulation initially because they start to get cold or tingly fingers and toes, and not just in winter.

What causes poor circulation?
Poor circulation occurs because the linings of your arteries have become "furred up" often due to a build up of fat on the cell walls which causes plaque to line the blood vessels.

Poor circulation can vary from mild to severe and cause a wide range of symptoms such as:

  • coldness
  • tirdness
  • numbness
  • swelling
  • water retention
  • varicose veins
  • shortness of breath
  • cramps
  • pins and needles
  • headaches
  • dizziness

In serious cases it can lead to high blood pressure, heart problems, strokes and other life threatening issues.

What does it affect?
Poor circulation can occur in anyone, but is most common in adults. Making sure you have a healthy lifestyle; eating well, exercising regularly and not smoking can lead to quick improvements in your circulation and symptoms. You should always check with a doctor before making big lifestyle changes though particularly if you are already experiencing more severe symptoms of bad circulation.

How to treat poor circulation
You can improve circulation in your legs by raising them when you are lying down. A circulation wedge can help you do this comfortably at night in bed or whilst on the sofa.
