What are Green Lipped Mussels?
Green lipped mussels originate from the water surrounding ‘the Land Down Under’, New Zealand. They are known for being the largest type of mussel worldwide, and because their shells are partly green in colour they got the name ‘green lipped mussels’. Let’s have a look at some of the potential benefits of these mussels, and how they might help you in relieving pain.
These mussels have been extensively researched for the past 60 years, when researchers wanted to create natural drugs by isolating specific compounds. The effects were tested on patients who were suffering from osteoarthritis, and they experienced a reduction in pain and stiffness. Not only did their pain improve, they found themselves being more mobile.
Randomized control trials have been conducted, and the results have been very promising. In a study from 2013, participants were instructed to take 2 green lipped mussel tablets daily, over a period of 4 weeks. Over half of these participants experienced a significant decrease of pain, and they found that their joint function had improved as well as their mobility.
Besides showing the effectiveness of taking green lipped mussel tablets for arthritis, the studies found that there were no adverse side effects, unlike many other arthritis treatments.
Not only may green lipped mussels be effective for arthritis sufferers, the New Zealand extract can also help with the following conditions:
Ensuring you have a healthy gut is more important than you may think, and to keep it in a good condition we need to regularly consume prebiotic and probiotic foods. Studies indicate that the extract from green lipped mussel may be beneficial for maintaining a healthy weight.
