Swollen Feet and Ankles Treatment

Swollen ankles, feet and legs are often referred to as a condition known as Oedema. One of the reasons behind swelling in these areas is a build-up of fluid. Swelling can affect day to day life and be uncomfortable for those that suffer with it, and while symptoms of Oedema will often go away on their own, there are steps you can take to ease the swelling.

The cause of swollen ankles, feet and legs can be down to a number of reasons including:

  • Standing/Sitting in the same position for long periods of time
  • Being overweight
  • A side effect of certain medicines (such as blood pressure, steroids, antidepressants and contraceptive pills)
  • Too much salty food in your diet
  • Strain or sprain injuries
  • Kidney, liver or heart issues
  • Blood clots

How can I reduce swelling in my feet and ankles?

Swelling should go away by itself over time, but there are steps you can take to ease the swelling at home. Try laying down and elevating your legs with a pillow, or some light exercise, this will help to get your blood flowing better. Alternatively, you can improve poor circulation by using a device such as Circulation Maxx which uses neuromuscular electrical stimulation therapy to help improve your blood flow in your lower extremities.

Make sure you seek advice from your GP if your swelling gets worse or doesn’t disappear after treating it at home for a few days.
