Treatment for Painful Feet
A lot of people suffer from painful feet. There can be a variety of different causes, but the feet can be susceptible to pain because they take a lot of strain each day. When we walk, run or stand, our feet take all of our weight and keep us balanced, so it’s no surprise that they can often be painful. And when you suffer from foot pain, it can have a big impact on your life, as it can become difficult to walk or to stand for long periods of time.
Common Causes of Painful Feet
You can experience foot pain for a range of different reasons. While some people may experience pain in the ball of their foot, others may find that they have more heel pain.
Flat Feet or High Arches
The natural shape of some people’s feet can cause them to experience foot pain. For example, those with flat feet (also called fallen arches) can experience pain in the ball of the foot or in the heel. Feet with high arches, on the other hand, can develop painful hammer toes.
Bunions, Corns and Calluses
Areas of hard skin on the feet in the form of corns and calluses, which develop from feet rubbing against shoes, can be a cause of foot pain. Bunions can also be very painful. This is where the big toe starts to push against the next toe along and the big toe joint starts to stick out in a bony, painful lump.
Plantar fasciitis is when the fibrous tissue beneath the heel becomes inflamed, causing heel pain. Age and weight can both contribute to this developing, as can both flat feet and high arches.
Oedema is the medical term for a build-up of fluid beneath the skin. In the feet, this causes them to swell and become stiff and aching. Oedema can be caused by a variety of conditions and treatments, such as kidney disease, heart failure and the contraceptive pill.
