Sunscreen isn’t anything new, but as a country, we’re still pretty bad at knowing when to apply sunscreen. The idea behind sunscreen is that it will help to protect against the sun’s powerful rays. Regular application of sunscreen or sun cream lessens the chance of developing skin cancer in adulthood.
Sunscreen protects you from UVA and UVB ultraviolet rays. UVA rays are what are more commonly associated with aging due to causing fine lines, wrinkles and age spots. These harsh rays can pass through glass, which means that you’re still exposed when in your car or stood in front of a window with no shade.
UVB rays are the ones that cause sunburn, unlike UVA these rays CANNOT pass through glass.
Both UVA and UVB rays can cause cancer, which is why you should invest in a sunscreen that has good protection for both. Skin cancer is non-discriminatory and can be diagnosed for any age, gender, or skin type (even those with darker skin, or who tan easier).
A good sunscreen will reduce the chance of skin damage such as discolourations, sagging or leathery-looking skin, and wrinkles.
SPF 30 & SPF 50
SPF stands for sun protection factor, and the higher the SPF the more protection from the suns harmful rays the sunscreen will provide. It is recommended by the NHS that the sunscreen you choose have an SPF of at least 30 against UVB and at least a 4-star UVA protection. This is why at Tower Health we only stock SPF 30 and SPF 50 sunscreens for the ultimate in sun protection.
